WHAT IS WRITTEN ABOUT: James Shellow

Dr. Warren S. McCulloch writes
I know James Shellow personally and have for several years. He is a very friendly youngster and has given good team play to several others whom I have known. He is inventive not only at the level of gadgets but at the level of ideas. He has more initiative than most of the fellows his own age in the field. His experimental ideas were his own and were excellent.

Dr. Warren S. McCulloch, Director of Research, Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute letter to Dr. Walls F. Humphrey, Director of Scientific Personnel, Chicago Midway Laboratories, University of Chicago.

In reply to your request for information concerning the qualifications of James M. Shellow, I have known him for several years and am convinced that he has an excellent, well-rounded intellect, a warm heart and a good sense of humor. I have come to know the candidate on account of common interests in those fields in which psychology and the physiology of the nervous system are jointly profiting from Cybernetics. He has found his way to the front in this field.... Within a year he will certainly have mastered the mathematics available to him at Chicago insofar as this goes in the right direction.... As to Shellow’s character, you may judge my opinion of it from this, that I call him my friend.

Letter to L.J. Burlingame, Secretary, Rhodes Scholarship Committee.
